Join our team of high-quality Early Childhood Education teachers and perform a variety of duties involving assisting in the planning and implementation of instructional and recreational activities appropriate for the needs and skills of the children in the Head Start Program and being a positive role model and team player. Contribute to the closing of the achievement gap.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of instructional and recreational activities appropriate for the needs and skills of the children in the Head Start Program.
  • Assist in the instruction and supervision of children involved in various classroom activities including cognitive/language, health, social/emotional, and personal hygiene skills.
  • Assist in observing, recording, and evaluating each child's activity, performance, behavior, and development; assist in developing and modifying individual education plans; assist in identifying and conveying individual child behavior problems.
  • Assist in maintaining on-going contact with parents; encourage and promote parent involvement; assist parents in developing and understanding their role as primary educator of their children; assist in the reinforcement and transfer of concepts and behaviors from the school to the home setting; participate in parent conferences and home visits.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops, formal classes, and in-service training classes to continually advance teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Assist in the maintenance of various files; prepare reports and forms for record keeping purposes.
  • Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties.
  • Assist in meeting the individual needs of all children in the Head Start program.
  • Work together with staff in planning and implementing policies, classroom purchases, promoting program goals and activities, and promotion and support of parental involvement in the classroom/program.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and program events as requested.
  • Screen children in all areas of development (language, hearing, vision, and 1st diagnostic screens.)
  • Ensure that the appearance, cleanliness, and safe environment of the classroom is appropriately maintained.
  • Assist in maintaining a healthy and safe environment, including completion of daily health & safety checklist.
  • Support cultural diversity in the classroom.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
  • Needs of children in a child care setting.
  • Appropriate activities for children of various ages and skill levels.
  • Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Basic principles and procedures of record keeping and report writing.
Ability to:
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Learn and apply the policies and procedures of the Head Start Program.
  • Learn the principles of child development theory.
  • Supervise children involved in Head Start Program activities.
  • Assist with the needs of children in a childcare setting.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Demonstrate a professional and positive attitude and appearance.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to serve and a passion for exceeding customer service expectations.

Qualifications for Success

  • Experience: One (1) year of experience working with pre-school children.
  • Education and Training: At a minimum Head Start Assistant Teachers must have:
    • Possession of a current Child Development Associates (CDA) credential, or a state-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential required.
    • OR, are enrolled in a program that will lead to an Associate or Baccalaureate degree.
    • OR, are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.
  • License or Certificate: Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Background Check:
    • Ability to pass a criminal background and Central Registry check.
    • A Motor Vehicle record check will be conducted.
  • Other: Must complete physical examination and TB test upon hire.
