What Success Looks Like In This Job

Under general supervision, responsible for developing and implementing an internal and external communications strategy as well as coordinating and implementing a marketing, public relations, and/or education program for the Sheriff’s Office.  Reports to the Community Connections Team Sergeant.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Develop newsletters, brochures, flyers, public service announcements, scripts, talking points and other communication materials.
  • Prepare the Sheriff’s Office branding and other communication pieces.
  • Assist with development of the Agency’s communications and public relations strategies and activities.
  • Assist the Community Connections Team with communication tools and strategies related to all aspects of social media.
  • Work with Community Connections Team to provide information regarding major events in the Sheriff’s Office service area, as well as events that may affect the residents of Adams County through social media platforms.
  • Photograph and video various events, functions, and divisions.
  • Assist in the development of annual communications plans that include outreach goals to the community and other surrounding agencies.
  • Assist the Public Information Officer with press conferences and press releases as appropriate.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of Department policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with members of all divisions, the county, other law enforcement agencies, the business community and the public.
  • Provide training and guidance to other members of the Sheriff’ Office related to effective communications strategies, messaging and general communications.
  • Plans, coordinates, and operates various Sheriff Office events and projects.
  • Creates, produces and edits videos for the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Perform other duties that are assigned.

Qualifications for Success

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Three years of experience in public information, journalism or communications or related fields preferred.
  • Five years public safety, public sector and/or government experience highly desirable.
  • One year of law enforcement patrol experience preferred.
  • Bilingual skills highly desirable.

  • Ability to develop innovative projects related to marketing and communications
  • Experience with professional and technical writing with strong spelling and grammar skills
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and Apple products
  • Experience in public speaking to large audiences
  • Must be able to work within timelines and deadlines
  • Proficient in the use of audio and visual equipment
  • Self-motivated 
  • General knowledge of the principles of graphic design and layout
  • Ability to develop printed and electronic marketing, training and communications materials
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects
  • Knowledge and skills in all aspects of social media
  • Must be flexible with shift work and scheduling to include occasional nights and weekends 
  • Must embrace teamwork
  • Excellent communicator with solid interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Maintain constant professionalism
