Join our dedicated, highly-qualified Public Works team and become our next Traffic Maintenance Supervisor, who plans, supervises, and participates in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices; as well as assists in performing complex maintenance assignments and trains team members, as needed, to do the same.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Supervise and train staff; prepare employee performance evaluations, and make recommendations based on employee job performance.
  • Plan, prepare, and maintain work schedules for the maintenance of traffic control devices and pavement marking installation and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with other County departments to perform essential functions including, but not limited to street sweeping, snow removal, and equipment maintenance.
  • Schedule the installation of traffic control devices and pavement markings.
  • Oversee the fabrication of traffic control devices and special signs.
  • Monitor and evaluate the division's inventory supplies and materials. Verify supply inventories annually.
  • Organize the assembly and installation of traffic control devices in and around county construction projects. Assist the Public Works Construction Inspection Team with monitoring construction projects for proper traffic control.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as street flooding, washed out roads, etc., by deploying or directing team members to deploy temporary traffic control devices and replacement of damaged traffic control devices as needed.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries in a professional and courteous manner, and ensure work required to resolve any complaint is completed in a timely manner.
  • Input and retrieve data from asset management software systems regarding traffic control installation and maintenance activities and prepare activity reports. Maintain the Traffic Control Maintenance database for the Traffic Division of Public Works.
  • Perform maintenance checks of vehicles and equipment to ensure equipment is operational at all times.
  • Schedule the removal of traffic obstructions such as trees, shrubs, and weeds to ensure adequate sight distance required for safe traffic flow.
  • Lay out pavement markings including pedestrian cross walks and lane lines.
  • Perform assigned administrative duties to support the Traffic Operations team as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Exercises direct supervision over staff.
To be successful, our ideal candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Properly use the methods, materials, tools, and equipment for the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Effectively apply information contained in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), along with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) standards, when deploying signing and striping assets.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Safely operate a variety of traffic maintenance equipment for the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Knowledge and use of sign fabrication software and equipment along with other software programs, such as MS Office and AutoCad. Includes maintenance of the Traffic Control Maintenance database for the Division.
  • Supervise and train staff involved in the installation and maintenance of signs and pavement markings.
  • Ensure staff receives appropriate training and certification for their job.
  • Write performance evaluations according to department criteria.
  • Estimate time and materials needed on a per job basis, keeping costs within budgetary limits.
  • Work independently, functioning as a team member and as a team leader.
  • Work with aerial trucks at heights up to 40 feet.
  • Computer Skills: Autocad, MS Office Suite, JD Edwards, Traffic Control Maintenance database.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications for Success


  • Four (4) years experience installing and maintaining traffic control devices.
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience.
  • Education and Training: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • License or Certificate:
    • Possess or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certifications in the following areas (16 hour courses):
      • Signs and Markings Level II
      • Work Zone Traffic Control
  • Background Check:  Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Other:
    • Ability to withstand exposure to cold, heat, chemicals, dust, and hazardous materials while on job. 
    • Ability to follow safe work practices on roadways with high volumes of traffic.
    • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
